The New York Times: NSA Engaged in 'Overcollection' of Surveillance on Americans
Report says NSA even tried to spy on one congressman on Middle East delegation, but that was just too muchNSA Surveillance | 04/16/2009 10:25 am The National Security Agency seems to have overstepped its bounds a bit by listening in on phone conversations and intercepting e-mail messages of Americans. The New York Times has a big scoop today, and reports that government and intelligence officials say the NSA engaged in "overcollection" of these communications as part of its post-September 11, 2001, surveillance program. One official said the agency’s actions likely were unintentional.  The NSA even reportedly tried to wiretap an unnamed member of Congress without a warrant, since he was then in contact with an ...

Liz Smith Reflects on Surviving L.A. Earthquake: Drink and Say 'Kismet!'
The one I fear most is Yellowstone exploding over its shuddering volcano causing nuclear winter over the world …Liz Smith | Today 12:00 am Are you kidding? I fear ALL natural disasters; the tsunami the Eastern Seaboard may experience if part of the Canary Islands fall into the sea … hurricanes, twisters, flooding, fire in a highrise. I watch this stuff on TV all the time and shudder and thank my lucky stars. And the one I fear most is Yellowstone exploding over its shuddering volcano, causing nuclear winter over the world. But then, you gotta go sometime. You may as well shrug, take another drink and say "Kismet!" I was flying in to land at  JFK back in the ’60s when the Eastern Seaboard disappeared into darkness under us as the electronic grid collapsed. We had to go on to ...

Dear Margo: Facing Facts
A woman’s sex life has been bad for 26 years. Margo Howard’s bright advice …Dear Margo | Today 12:00 am Facing Facts DEAR MARGO: My partner and I have been together for 26 years. After a messy divorce, he said he didn’t need a piece of paper to tell him whom to love. A few months ago I finally got up the nerve to tell him how dissatisfying our sex life has been. I asked him if he wanted to tell me anything, and he said he had not been aware that there was a problem. I tried to be as specific as I could, while at the same time not blaming him. He knew I was inexperienced, because I told him. Now to the problem: Since our "talk," we have not had sex. In fact, he seems to fall asleep on the couch more and more. I wanted things to get better, not worse. We ...

Spain May Let Bush Loyalists Off Hook for Alleged Guantanamo Torture
Officials say U.S. should try any terror case first; Obama may release some details of secret CIA interrogation memos, but keep others secretGuantanamo Bay Interrogation, CIA | 04/16/2009 10:45 am Former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and five other Bush administration officials may be off the hook in Spain. Although a Spanish court originally decided to take a case by human rights groups accusing six Bush administration officials of sanctioning torture at Guantanamo Bay, prosecutors now want the court to drop the case. The case threatens to turn the court "into a toy in the hands of people who are trying to do a political action," Attorney General Candido Conde-Pumpido said, reports CNN. "We undoubtedly cannot support that action." Although the judge could still decide to take the ...

Ann Coulter Rejected Sean Penn Movie Offer
Ann Coulter will not be appearing in a film about Valerie PlamePost | 04/16/2009 11:25 am Most women would leap at the opportunity to spend some time with Sean Penn, but not Ann Coulter. The conservative author turned down Penn’s invitation to appear in a movie about Valerie Plame, the former CIA agent outed by Robert Novak. Naomi Watts will star as Plame, while Penn appears as her husband, Joe Wilson. According to the New York Post, Penn wanted Coulter to appear in a scene and shout "invectives" at him, but she declined because, in all likelihood, the movie would paint her as a raving right winger. Art imitating life or just a left-leaning film trying to ...

Joan Ganz Cooney Feared Homelessness in Westhampton
I worry that I’ll end up homeless, in rubble, in my bare feet and nightgown …Joan Ganz Cooney | Today 12:00 amI was once in a very scary hurricane in Westhampton Beach. I lay awake all night waiting for the roof to be blown off as each gust rhythmically lifted the roof slightly, and I was sure the next one would have me looking at the sky. It was not a disaster but I wasn’t sure of that at the time. I do have a fear that an earthquake will hit New York ever since we had a slight one a few years ago. I worry that I’ll end up homeless, in rubble, in my bare feet and nightgown. If a nuke hit New York and I survived the first blast, I would take two aspirins and go to bed, as there would be no way of getting out and I’m not sure I’d want to anyway.

Rep. Jan Schakowsky Blasts 'Fox News-Fueled' Tea Parties as 'Despicable'
Illinois Rep. Jan Schakowsky had harsh words for anti-tax protestersPost | 04/16/2009 4:20 pm Illinois Rep. Jan Schakowsky came out swinging yesterday against the so-called tea parties, which she described as "despicable" and as "Obama bashing" parties. Anti-tax activists rallied yesterday in "tea parties," protests that gain their name from the revolutionary-era Boston Tea Party. The rallies, said Schakowsky, besmirch the American spirit. And, for its promotion of the events, Fox News apparently deserves some blame. Via The Hill: The ‘tea parties’ being held today by groups of right-wing activists, and fueled by FOX News Channel, are an ...
